    • 1). Change your diet. Avoid foods that are known to contribute to acid reflux: tomatoes, onions, garlic, fried foods, chocolate, spicy foods, alcohol, citrus fruits, peppermint and caffeine filled drinks such as coffee and teas. Choose more acid friendly alkaline foods which help to neutralize stomach acid.

    • 2). Gargle warm salt water every evening. Use a high concentration of salt to water ratio has been shown to help prevent a night time acid reflux sore throat.

    • 3). Avoid sleeping flat on your back. Prop your mattress up approximately 5" to help gravity keep your stomach acids out of your throat.

    • 4). Change how you eat. Eat small meals every 2 1/2 - 3 hours. Avoid eating anything at least 2 hours before bedtime.

    • 5). Take preventative medications. Talk with your doctor about your acid reflux sore throat issues. Determine whether a prescription is necessary for a proton pump inhibitor medication to shut down acid production in your stomach. Talk to your doctor about other easy options such as over the counter drugs like an antacid or h2 blocker to help control stomach acids.
