Non-Toxic Ways to Wash Walls
- White vinegar is a natural, nontoxic product that has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. It will remove 99 percent of bacteria on your walls. To use it, fill a spray bottle with white vinegar and spray it over the walls. Wipe the vinegar up with clean cloths. The smell is pungent, but it will dissipate as soon as the vinegar dries.
- Another natural, nontoxic cleaning product is baking soda. It also absorbs odors and will therefore kill bacteria and remove bad smells from the surface of your walls. To use it, mix the baking soda into a paste with water. Apply the paste to stains and dirty areas of the wall. Scrub the baking soda until the stains are gone, and rinse the wall with clear water.
- Hydrogen peroxide is a nontoxic stain remover and disinfectant that you can use to remove stains from the walls in your home. To use it, spray 3 percent hydrogen peroxide on walls, and wipe them up with clean cloths. Do not spray it on clothes or on carpeting as it can bleach some textiles.
- Many homemade cleaning solutions use essential oils to deliver a pleasant odor to the cleaning solution. Some essential oils, such as tea tree, lavender, lemongrass and eucalyptus oils are anti-bacterial. To use them to clean your walls, mix 1 cup of warm water with 20 drops of essential oils. Spray the solution onto the walls, and wipe them up with clean cloths. Do not rinse the walls as the residue will help prevent mold and bacteria growth.
