We now know that the subconscious acquires knowledge by repetition and not through logic. We have also learned that it will respond to directions coming from the conscious mind provided that the two are in contact with each other when these directions are being made. We have also learned that, for this to occur, the mind must be in a meditative state, calm and poised.
This meditative state is also called the Alpha state. It is one of a class of electrical brainwave rhythms that are emitted by humans. These can be measured by using an Electroencephalogram or EEG. Alpha rhythms are 8 to 12 cycles per second (cps). Beta rhythms, on the other hand, are 13 to 30 cps. Delta rhythms are 0.05 to 3 cps, and Theta rhythms are 4 to 7 cps.
This has been applied by some companies in the area of deep brain stimulation. The rationale is that when the mind is in a deep meditative state, when it is relaxed and when the usual defenses are down, the subconscious mind is more malleable and more open to suggestions. This is often used in combination with sealed flotation tanks, magnetic fields, and sound frequencies for cortical stimulation.
This technology is being applied into finding cures for illnesses like Parkinson's disease, amnesia, and dementia. It is also being applied as an aid to hasten the recovery and promote well-being in chronic patients.
Training the subconscious mind becomes very important when you consider the fact that the subconscious is susceptible to both positive and negative thoughts. When the subconscious is focused on negative thoughts instead of positive thoughts, it will then result in these negative thoughts becoming real.
Following are a number of methodologies and tips on tapping into the power of the subconscious:
Affirmations. Repeating to oneself such statements as: I feel great; Today is light and easy; Its getting better and better everyday, every day in a consistent but gently manner. Saying it out loud or quietly will both work. Just focus your attention on the affirmation while excluding any distractions or random thoughts. The exercise needs to be repeated for five minutes. The change might not occur immediately but it will affect the way you feel for the remainder of the day.
Other methodologies, aside from repeating the affirmations daily, include writing them down, a process that further imprints their importance within the subconscious. This also provides the person with a ready list which will further remind him to think of positive thoughts. Some people will respond positively to a self-recorded tape of their affirmations. Some will identifying a role model and include the traits they want to emulate in their positive affirmations. This process also provides them with a concrete goal to aim for.
Visualization. This method has helped a lot of people change their habits or achieve their goals. The idea is to visualize in your mind's eye what you want to achieve. Visualization involves both relaxation exercises and positive imaging. It works because the subconscious mind is incapable of distinguishing between what is real and what is not. It experiences both reality and visualization in the same manner.
Visualizing what you desire via your subconscious, you are more likely to realize an opportunity when it presents itself.
Visualize daily. The more you visualize, the easier it becomes. Visualization needs to be done for at least five minutes daily.
The end point must be clearly defined in your mind when you practice visualization. It is likewise important to associate strong feelings with the scene being visualized. This will increase the intensity of the visualization. The more intense the feeling, the more effective is the visualization.
There are currently quite a number of visualization techniques that are available. Aside from simply using your imagination and playing the scenes in your mind, some people collect photographs of the things they want to have and put those into an album or make a collage out of them. They then look at those pictures when they do their daily visualizations. Some individuals take it a step further by making what are called mind movies. Feeling Good. By focusing on feeling good, we can influence good results. Have you noticed that great things tend to occur when we feel great? This is not a matter of coincidence. Our life reflects how we feel.
A last piece of advice: Patience is needed in order to fully and effectively tap the power of the subconscious mind. It is unfortunate that today's society is full of individuals who demand instant gratification.
Always remember that things always work out in the end. When we don't trust and accept this, when we become impatient, we actually get slowed down. We can get distracted and we can even end up on the wrong track.
